Follow the F***ing Instructions (HMP132)

Why development requires doing what you don’t want to do

What if one of the most important capacities for development is also one of the least glamorous: following the fucking instructions? In this episode, I explore what happens when a clear developmental demand collides with discomfort, uncertainty, self-image, and the fear of getting something wrong. The result is often not simple refusal, but something subtler: modifying the assignment, seeking reassurance, substituting a familiar strength, explaining why we did something different, or turning a task back into a relational exchange. We preserve our existing organization while appearing to engage the challenge.

FTFI is not an argument for obedience. Mature people can question an instruction, refuse it, or leave a developmental container altogether. But once we voluntarily accept a challenge, discomfort does not automatically invalidate the demand. Sometimes the instruction is specifically designed to prevent us from solving a problem in the way we already know how to solve it. Productive failure, confusion, and temporary incompetence are not defects in that process; they are often the conditions under which genuine learning becomes possible.

Using an astrological case study, I look at the relationship among Will, Structure, standards, and learning—and at the crucial distinction between scaffolding another person’s capacity and substituting our capacity for theirs. Development requires support, but support becomes counterproductive when it repeatedly rescues us from the very conditions that would require us to grow.
